EDGE Feature: Sustainable aviation: How 3D printing makes airplanes more environmentally friendly

The University of Toronto EDGE magazine featured Manufacturing as the hot topic of the Spring 2015 issue.

The manufacturing sector in Canada is regarded by economists to be vital for economic growth and innovation, producing $280 billion in exports in 2012 alone. The Toronto Institute of Advanced Manufacturing (TIAM) is leading innovation in advanced manufacturing by providing the expertise and infrastructure to turn great ideas into products.

Professor Craig Steeves is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) and Professor Glenn Hibbard is an associate professor for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Together, they are developing new composite materials and lightweight structures for aviation that are both lighter and stronger than ever before. “We think a lot about sustainable aviation: the environmental impact of aircraft. If we can do something that reduces their weight, that has a direct effect on how much fuel they require,” Steeves explains (EDGE Magazine).
