EDGE Feature: This “enabling technology” is invisible — but it’s all around you

The University of Toronto EDGE magazine featured Manufacturing as the hot topic of the Spring 2015 issue.

The manufacturing sector in Canada is regarded by economists to be vital for economic growth and innovation, producing $280 billion in exports in 2012 alone. The Toronto Institute of Advanced Manufacturing (TIAM) is leading innovation in advanced manufacturing by providing the expertise and infrastructure to turn great ideas into products.

Established in 1998, the Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies (CACT) is a collaborative effort by researchers from the departments of mechanical engineering and materials science, dedicated to both fundamental and applied research in the area of industrial coatings application. Led by Professor Javad Mostaghimi (Director), the CACT conducts fundamental research, both analytical and experimental, in the area of thermal spray coating. These coatings will grant material properties that will be beneficial for the manufacturing process such as:

  • Developing coatings for reactors that process waste from nuclear power generation and make it into hydrogen
  • Improving the infrastructure that burns municipal waste to make the process more environmentally-friendly
  • Developing coatings for valves in factories to make them much less vulnerable to corrosion
